AUCKLAND HOUSING · BETA
Is Auckland building like a donut?
Auckland is most crowded at its centre, yet the inner suburbs 2 to 6 km from Britomart took few of the people added between the 2013 and 2023 Censuses. Most went to the edges. Step through the map to see where, alongside the three charts.

How to read it
Areas are Stats NZ statistical areas (SA2s), roughly suburbs. Distances are straight-line from Britomart. Rings mark every 2 km, the same bands as the charts. The shading marks the inner suburbs (2 to 6 km) and everywhere beyond 18 km.
Steps 1 to 3 use the 2013 and 2023 Census usually resident counts. Growth a year is the average yearly change between the two Censuses; areas with fewer than 100 residents in 2013 are left off step 3. Areas that lost people show a red bar. In step 3, deeper shades mean growth further from the average.
Step 4 shows dwellings consented, not completed. Stats NZ estimates most consented homes are built, about nine months later. A consent counts one home whatever its size. The grey and teal bars in step 4 use separate scales, shown in the key. The latest year is part of a year.
